| Time: | 9-2 | |||
| Location: | Vermont Technical College | |||
| Details: | Please join us at VTC April 23rd for a Training on Holding Focus Groups on College Campuses, and earn 3 CEU’s! Take this opportunity to: - Attend a course, led by Anne Dorwaldt, Asst. Director of Research Programs, Office of Health Promotion Research at UVM, on how to hold focus groups on college campuses - Earn CEU's: 3 CEU's are pending for Mental Health Counselors, Psychologists, and Social Workers - Enjoy lunch and networking time with other colleges and coalitions, to share ideas and planning Course Description: Focus groups are a very good tool for understanding the lifestyle and culture of any audience you may be trying to reach. They can help you get at the depth of feelings, attitudes, values and ideas that paper and pencil surveys cannot really tap into. Focus groups are also a good tool to use in testing out rough versions of educational materials, media messages or service or program plans with an audience you hope to reach or serve. At the end of this 3 hour session participants will: * Understand the purposes of focus groups, i.e. when to use them and when they may not be the best tool * Understand the basics of developing discussion guides * Describe the skills necessary to facilitate a focus group * Be able to fulfill the role of the focus group observer **Deadline to sign up for the training is March 15th** Please RSVP to Rita Johnson, VCAN Coordinator: rita@friendsofrecoveryvt.org. Additional details will be posted, as they are available. Thank you, we look forward to your attendance! |

Center Amy Livingston, PIRE Eval. Coord./Addison SPF Sarah Munro, SA Prev. Counselor-ADAP Rita Johnson, VCAN Coordinator/FOR-VT Leadership- Brief VCAN Leadership History: Doris Augman-Champlain Counselor/DA Ed. started VCAN roughly five years ago; Melissa Culver served as Co-Chair with Mary Beth Vassar for two years; Mary Beth Vassar and Jyoti Daniere are current Co-Chairs -VCAN uses grant funding to supplement small projects at Vermont colleges; VCAN Grant is written [and approved] per half-year -Mary Beth does not have DA Ed. in her title; Diana Gonzalez is the UVM DA Ed.; Mary Beth will be stepping down this year, as she is no longer able to serve as Co-Chair -Jennifer Hughes, Champlain Counselor/Drug & Alcohol Educator, will shadow and then phase in—August (will be gradual process); Champlain has DA Ed. title built into position much more clearly than many other schools in VT Discussion: Does it make sense to continue VCAN in the same format that it has been in? -Participation from schools is way down -Can supplement social norming and small programming; cannot just give out money to applicants -If colleges aren’t attending, maybe need to shift the mission of the Network -Trainings? Have been mostly attended by State people, not members from colleges -Can VCAN continue? --will it just become a web presence? -Members ask themselves—what is VCAN going to bring me? What does it mean to me? |

| Time: | 9-12 | |||
| Location: | Champlain College | |||

VCAN is a state initiative—does VCAN serve as an operating body surrounding perceptions of VT colleges; use some CORE data as a whole -How could the money best be used, or should we [VCAN] merge with another agency?? Discussion: Carol: ‘Peeling back the layers’ alcohol affecting the college experience: social, financial, environmental Property damage, date rape; trickle-down effect from drinking at colleges Research on drinking—how does it relate to 4-yr graduation rates? Leadership may not be aware, or may be overwhelmed by how to address it If policies are really enforced, drinking will actually go down; administrations tend to believe otherwise; cultural double-bind, esp. in New England |

| 11/06/2009 | VCAN Meeting Minutes Part I | Rita Johnson | ||
| Time: | 9-12 | |||
| Location: | VDH in Burlington | |||
| Details: | Members in Attendance: Jyoti Daniere, VCAN Co-Chair, Middlebury College John Searles, ADAP Amy Livingston, PIRE Erika Edwards, VDH Jennifer Hughes, Champlain College Carol Plante, Lamoille Prevention Campaign David Bergh, JSC Patty Baroudi, ADAP Dan Roberts, Green Mtn. College Rob Festa, Green Mtn. College Richard Mayer, Landmark College John Zaber, Sterling College Carol Rose, VT Safety Ed. Center Mariah Sanderson, BPHC Bob Flewelling, PIRE Rita Johnson, VCAN Admin. Coordinator Notes for Core Survey Discussion I. 2008 Core Survey Administration Procedures-Bob Flewelling A. List of participating colleges (see slides) B. Comments from campus coordinators on the logistics of administering the survey Johnson State used paper version of survey; interested in how using online format works for those schools who participate online. More student participation if done in the classroom? Middlebury-Jyoti had students complete survey online—400 students initially; sent out e-mail, 200 more students participated. May do both paper and online form of survey next year. Randomness? Students inquired about this at Middlebury. Smaller schools tend to use paper surveys. Landmark: 450 students—200+ participated. Difficult to do paper surveys b/c need cooperation from professors, need graduate student/TA or RA to administer them. Would a school get a different set of numbers if distribution were more randomized? Middlebury: Confliction in data/stats Closed health center at night; students are being told that now if they are overly intoxicated, they must go to the ER; students who are intoxicated, but not a danger to themselves or others, can call a friend to sit with them, or go to “drunk tank” staffed by RAs. Students interpreted that this change was due to CORE survey data Disconnect between what is going on (i.e. one out of five students do not drink) and what is perceived by students |
